Can we change the words to a song?

Tuesday March 6, 2007

Rating: (1)

When a songwriter puts the words to a song, they usually have a very particular meaning, so generally the words shouldn't be changed.

The following changes are allowable:

1. Modernisation of language (e.g., "thee" changes to "you")
2. Ancientisation (is that a word?) of language (e.g., "you" changes to "thee")
3. Individualisation (e.g., "we" to "I")
4. Incorporation (e.g., "I" to "we")

No other changes are permitted, particularly those effecting gender, theological stance, meaning or intent.

For permission to change the words of a song, please contact the song administrators. Depending on the change requested, they may be able to give you permission right away, but sometimes they will need to get permission from the songwriters.
